Alzheimer’s Summit on November 15th, 2017

The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Southwest Wisconsin-Green County along with the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin and the Monroe Clinic are excited to announce the Alzheimer’s Summit scheduled for November 15th, 2017.

This year’s summit will include keynote speakers Dr. Steven Barczi, Former Wisconsin Governor Martin J. Schreiber, Dr. Lori Phelps and Suanne Zimmerman.

The day will start with registrations and the ability to visit resource booths. Dr. Steven Barczi, a specialist in geriatrics and sleep medicine affiliated with the University Hospital and the William S. Middleton Veteran’s Hospital will provide our opening presentation. He will provide an overview of Alzheimer’s disease and the effects of sleep concerns.

The focus will then switch to a family caregiver’s point of view of caring for one with Alzheimer’s disease. Former Gov. Schreiber is the author of “My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver. He will share lessons from his more than 10-year journey as a caregiver for his wife Elaine, who lives with Alzheimer’s disease. He will candidly describe his challenges and missteps, and highlights how compassion and humor provide comfort to both caregiver and the person with dementia. Former Gov. Schreiber’s raw honesty and practical advice will inspire other caregivers to find patience, courage and love as they climb the Alzheimer’s mountain.

After lunch, Dr. Lori Phelps, doctor with the Behavioral Health Department at the Monroe Clinic will discuss self-care. She will discuss the importance of self-care among caregivers as it can be stressful and take impact of the caregiver’s quality of life. She will teach ways to manage stress during an interactive workshop.

We will end our day with Suanne Zimmerman, a Dementia Specialist Trainer with the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin. Prior to working with the Alliance, she was an Activity Director and will talk about what activities are suited for those with dementia. She will provide resources and information on how to integrate, modify and initiate activities at home or in a facility for those with memory loss.

Are you someone that has struggled with increased costs of fuel? Do you know if someone that can’t afford heating fuel and is heating his or her home with space heaters? If so, the Green County Energy Assistance Program may offer some help to these households.



Energy Assistance eligibility is based on the income of the household (no asset test). We look at the previous three months’income to determine eligibility for Energy Assistance. Eligible households will receive a one-time payment towards their heating and electric costs. This payment goes directly towards their heating and electric costs. This payment goes directly to your fuel and electric vendor

and your account is credited with the deposit.
